About
I'm an Animation Professor at LUCA School of Arts, campus C-mine in Genk, Belgium. I teach at the Re:Anima Joint Master in Animation and I'm a senior researcher at the Inter-Actions Research Unit. My research interests include philosophy of Technics, power relations inscribed in and reinforced by technical objects, and decolonial perspectives in animation. Previously, I was an Animation Professor at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), in Brazil. MFA and PhD by the Graduate Program in Arts at EBA/UFMG. I'm also a free software advocate, animator, rigger and I also like to code. You can see some of my works and know a bit more about me at:
Yes, I had a blog. Haven't updated it since 2011. Anyway, if you need something from there I have kept backwards compatibility and you can read it below.
Yeah... I've been pretty busy with lots of work and other things like moving to another apartment.
A cool thing that I saw is that finally the Spanish guys from Ilion released their trailer for Planet 51, which had Pepeland as one of the artists involved. It's been some years since I first saw about this movie, and it's good to know that it will finally come out this year.
When we hear about claymation, most things that comes to our mind are pretty cute. I think that this is about to change...
I just saw this video, and I couln't resist to post it here. I'm sure it was a hell of a work to do, and it has some very funny gags. But there's a warning: you won't find anything cute. Well... maybe at the end. ;)
Well... it's been more than a month since I went to Belo Horizonte and I didn't write about my trip here. Until now. :)
The trip was really great. Me, Suryara and Jovan had the chance of meeting some very nice people and to learn a bunch of cool stuff.
First we went to the AnimaMundi animation workshop with the Argentinian animator Juan Pablo Zaramella. He is a very cool guy, extremely talented and accessible.
He talked a lot about how he builds the narratives and the way his productions are made. Besides his natural talent, he is very knowledgeable about all the details surrounding the construction of a successful story. Another thing that fascinated me was his camera choices: it is amazing how his well-thought camera use adds to his stories.
The result of the workshop is in this video below, called "La Mala" (or "The Suitcase"). The Pixilation technique was the quickest way to get the "hands dirty" after all his valuable teachings. This piece of animation was shot in only one day, and for those who don't know me personally, I'm the first "victim" to appear in the video:
We also had the chance of visiting the new headquarters of Animassauro studios. There we had a very nice chat with all those talented and friendly artists. :)
Another cool meeting was with the great designer Eduardo Recife, who maintains the widely known Misprinted Type. He is such a nice person that is hard to find a fair way to write that on this humble blog.
Finally, on the last day we went to Blender Pro: the Brazilian Blender Conference. It was awesome to meet personally all those people which I only knew though "teh internets". There was some very interesting presentations and artwork, and it was very cool to talk with all those Blenderheads. As a proof that we really went there, here's the official photo of the event. Here I give you the challenge to find us among all those people:
