About

I'm an Animation Professor at LUCA School of Arts, campus C-mine in Genk, Belgium. I teach at the Re:Anima Joint Master in Animation and I'm a senior researcher at the Inter-Actions Research Unit. My research interests include philosophy of Technics, power relations inscribed in and reinforced by technical objects, and decolonial perspectives in animation. Previously, I was an Animation Professor at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), in Brazil. MFA and PhD by the Graduate Program in Arts at EBA/UFMG. I'm also a free software advocate, animator, rigger and I also like to code. You can see some of my works and know a bit more about me at:

Blender Animation Book

I've written a book about Rigging and Animation in Blender for Packt Publishing. You can get the files here.

Old Blog

Yes, I had a blog. Haven't updated it since 2011. Anyway, if you need something from there I have kept backwards compatibility and you can read it below.

2008-Oct-15: Blender 2.48!

Yay!! :)

Run and download the newest Blender version, full of cool features like the ones made during Apricot project and Grease Pencil.

I'm happy to see they used my image to illustrate the Grease Pencil feature! It's on the features list. :)

UPDATE: got on Allan Brito's website this demo video of the GLSL and all the game engine goodies. It's good to stress that everything on that video is computed in REAL TIME! :D

2008-Oct-14: The Pumpking of Nyefar
The Pumpking of Nyefar

I don't know if everyone had already seen this wonderful short called The Pumping of Nyefar.

The story was created by Tod Polson and by the great master Maurice Noble, and this was probably his last contribution to animation in life. The narration was done by June Forray.

Beautifully animated and with astonishing backgrounds, it is easily one of the best shorts I've seen in a while. You can watch it on Cartoon Brew TV or download the mp4 file directly.

Make sure you visit the official site, which has a lot of cool info on it.

Just as a teaser, if you're still not sure if you want to watch it:

In 1994, Maurice Noble began training a group of young designers at Chuck Jones Film Productions. A lot of us were working on our own personal short projects, several of them based on ethnic folktales. Maurice thought it would be a great idea if the group of us could develop a series of shorts inspired by stories from around the world. We called this series “Noble Tales,” and we, his trainees, became known as the “Noble Boys” (which also included a few girls). Many of us traveled around the world and developed and together designed several dozen idea.

Jealous? Me??? Nooooooo!!!! C'mon... ;)

2008-Oct-14: Networking
Networking

Got today on my mailbox the monthly newsletter from the guys at Animation Mentor.

Beside some cool things like the funny interview with brazilian Bruno Monteiro, there's a very interesting article on networking in animation.

I believe I don't need to be verbose to explain the importance of it, nor that I have much to add to an article written by someone with 25 years on the animation field, So I just recommend this reading to everyone. :)

2008-Oct-13: Done! :)

Man... another month without posting. But now (really) I'm back to regular writing here.

I've finished this week the Animation Personal Trainer with Keith Lango. It was fantastic, and I've learned a lot. Soon I'll bring you more words on it and my final animation, which is rendering right now. :)

While it isn't ready, here goes a cool link about the story of Emud Mokhberi, one of the makers of the fantastic Gobelins short Oktapodi.

Video interview with DreamWorks recruiter

Saw today at CGTalk a link to a very cool video interview with Deanne Koehn, recruiter at DreamWorks Animation.

It was conducted by Roberto Ortiz at Siggraph 2008, and it really worth watching. :)
