About

I'm an Animation Professor at LUCA School of Arts, campus C-mine in Genk, Belgium. I teach at the Re:Anima Joint Master in Animation and I'm a senior researcher at the Inter-Actions Research Unit. My research interests include philosophy of Technics, power relations inscribed in and reinforced by technical objects, and decolonial perspectives in animation. Previously, I was an Animation Professor at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), in Brazil. MFA and PhD by the Graduate Program in Arts at EBA/UFMG. I'm also a free software advocate, animator, rigger and I also like to code. You can see some of my works and know a bit more about me at:

Old Blog

Yes, I had a blog. Haven't updated it since 2011. Anyway, if you need something from there I have kept backwards compatibility and you can read it below.

2008-Jul-07: Some site changes

This weekend I took the time to make some changes on this site.

- But where are they? Everything looks the same!

Yeah... I know... actually if everything looks the same then it is ok. The changes I made were under the hood: a big upgrade on my hosting server.

As most of you may have noticed, I've been facing some downtimes here very often. With my new hosting plan I believe those are finally over. =)

This new plan gives me a 20 TeraByte monthly bandwidth limit (w00t). I had to invest some on it, but I really think it worth the money. When I finally finish and release my short I will be a lot less worried with stability and bandwith limits.

Oh... and now this site answers not only by virgiliovasconcelos.com, but also with .net and .com.br extensions. The "blog.virgiliovasconcelos.xxx" also seems to be working fine with all three domains.

=)

If you find any problems, please let me know, ok?

2008-Jul-03: Almost a week later...

Almost a week without posting here... sigh.

The last thing I talked about here was about Wall-E premiere. After that, 6 days of silence.

Some may think that this silence was some kind of homage to this near silent Andrew Stanton movie. Unfortunately it was only lack of time for posting new things. This week is being extremely busy for me, as I'm in another city for work reasons since Monday.

Fortunately I got a little free time today, so I managed not only to write this post but also to go watch Wall E for the second time. If you didn't watch it yet, please do a favor to yourself and buy a ticket to this movie. =)

Wall-E is simply wonderful and, in my humble opinion, makes the word "genius" to be placed right after the name Andrew Stanton. After all, it is somewhat common to be a director of a couple of movies: what is really something is to have "Finding Nemo" and "Wall E" as their names.

CG Society has a cool article on the technical things of this movie, and USA Today has this another one which points out some things that make Wall E really stand from the crowd of animated movies.

And I didn't even talk about Presto, which is so amazing that deserves a place along with some Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry shorts. And there is no higher compliment to any animated short. =)

If iTunes store is open to your country, I think it really worth paying US$ 1,99 to have this short in your computer.

And now I hope my blogging routine return to be as usual. =)

2008-Jun-25: Kevin Koch E-Critique
Kevin Koch E-Critique

The site 11 Second Club is very cool to exercise our animation muscles. After it became supported by AnimationMentor, it just got better.

One of the cool things about it is the E-Critique, where the winner gets a free video critique by one of Animation Mentor tutors.

This month's winner was the Brazilian Ivan Oviedo, who got an excellent critique by Kevin Koch. I think everyone should watch this free animation class. =D

Gobelins short openings for Annecy

Every year Gobelins students make animated shorts for openings at Annecy.

The shorts from this year are available online and are a pleasure to watch, as usual. The ones I liked the most are Wild Casting (great running sequence) and Garuda. =D
